Sir Edmund Hillary

For Milind's last home learning challenge he gave a presentation of Sir Edmund Hillary's life.

He included these facts and more!

Sir Edmund Hillary

·      Sir Ed was born in Auckland on 20th July 1919
·      He started climbing when he was 16 years old
·      He climbed his first large mountain when he was 20 and continued exploring and climbing mountains
The Everest Expedition
·      400 people were in the group to climb Mt Everest
Climbing Everest
·      To climb the mountain, they did it in stages

Hillary’s Step
·      On 29 May 1953 Sir Ed and Tenzing got their chance to climb to the top of the mountain
·      But the biggest problem they had was a huge rock wall
·      They needed to climb the rock wall to get to the top
·      The rock wall is now named Hillary’s Step
The Top of the Mountain
·      Sir Ed and Tenzing made it to the top of the mountain
·      But they could only stay for a few minutes because the air is thin
·      The thin air makes it hard to breathe
After Everest

·      They were the third group to go to the South Pole
·      But they were the first one’s to use motor vehicles to do it

Landscape Painting

We painted these landscapes with Mrs Shepherd.  The surprising thing is we didn't use paint brushes.  We had to use fingers, sponges, twigs, sticks and leaves.
The photos that make up this video can be found on our school website, where they can be downloaded individually – click here.

Rosie's World

This afternoon we checked out Rosie's World. We found out –
  1. Rosie is a dairy cow - she gives us milk
  2. Cows eat lots of grass each day
  3. There are 1,000 different types of cow in the world
  4. Jersey cows are brown, are smaller than other cows and produce the best milk
  5. Cows have four stomachs
  6. Milking machines get the milk from the cow's udder so we can drink it
  7. The milk from the cows are collected by milk tankers and is taken to the dairy factory
  8. At the dairy factory milk is made into lots of different things - flavoured milk, cheese and butter
  9. There is a very clever robotic system on some farms that helps the farmer with the work on the farm
  10. Grass comes up from the cow's stomach into it's mouth and it chews it again for a minute because grass is very hard to digest
  11. Cows get scared of big things, like trucks
  12. Cows eat 70 kilograms of grass a day
  13. Milk gets pasteurized to remove bacteria - heated to 72 degrees Celsius and cooled to 3 degrees Celsius

Mystery Reader

Today we welcomed our third mystery reader into Room 9.  We had some clues to help us discover who it was going to be.
~ My favourite colour is red.
~ I come from a family with seven children.
~ I am tall and I like to exercise.
~ I enjoy dancing.
~ I like to read.
There were a number of children who thought they could guess, but no one did!
Who could it be?
Thanks Tekweni for reading See You Later Alligator by Rina A. Foti.  We enjoyed reading, snap, snap, snappity-snap when it came up in the book.

Rebekah's Mother's Day Card

  1. First I drew me and my mummy and then I drew my imagination.
  2. I coloured them in.  It took me about two or three days.
  3. I got my ruler and my pencil and three colours.  I used my ruler with my blue colouring vivid.  I used my pencil to write my words.  Then I traced my words with my red and green vivids.
Then I rubbed the pencil work out.
  4. I drew a picture of a girl.
  5. I folded it in half and my mummy loved it.

What a mess!
The rubbish bag is filling quickly.
Thanks for the help Rhys.

Milind's Gift

Milind decided that when his family had some plants they no longer wanted he could donate them to the school.  With Mr Iain's help they are now planted and help make our school look wonderful.  What a great idea Milind!  Thank you.
This is what the area looked like before the planting.
What a difference the new plants make!

Butterfly Art

We created these art works with a variety of media.  First we looked at lots of photos of butterfies and sketched some to gather our ideas.  Next we created our own butterfly shapes and added patterns in a symmetrical design.  Then we dyed the butterflies and used vivid to outline our shapes and patterns.  Our backgrounds were made with paint using brushes, rollers and sponges.
You can find the individual art works for viewing and printing on the school website - click here.

Xavier's Grass Man

Xavier made this grass man at PINs with Miss Vidal.  He has watered it at home and brought it back to show us just how well it is growing.
